Early Neurological Stimulation
(ENS)

All rats begin daily socialization starting at at 2 days old. We cuddle with our rats and use early neurological stimulation techniques to improve the health, longevity, and handleability or our rats. Early neurologucal stimulation is a technique where rats are handled and stimulated in lightly stressful ways that desensitize rats to stress while handling and improve cardiovascular health. ENS was developed in the 1960's and has been expanded upon by researchers and pet breeders including dog breeders.

ENS is conducted by doing the following activities for 3-5 seconds each.

1. Brushing the rats feet with a small, soft paintbrush to tickle them
2. Placing the rat on a cold, damp cloth
3. Holding the rat erect with its head up and tail facing the floor
4. Holding the rat upside down, with its head facing the floor and tail facing upwards
5. Holding the rat on it's back with its tummy facing upwards

Because each of these activities is performed for only a few seconds, these exposures are able to quickly desensitize the rat to being handled without causing excessive stress. Rats who are raised with ENS have been found to produce significantly less cortisol while being handled than control groups in studies. This makes our rats ideal for families with children and first time rat owners.

Our rats are socialized both with humans and with dogs. Rats begin socialization with very friendly and small gentle dogs starting at around 2 weeks old. Early socialization helps our rats be desensitized to potential fears of larger furry friends. However, we caution adopters to always be vigilant if they have other animals in their home to avoid accidents.
